“Just by standing for 2 hours throughout an average workday, you can burn 280 extra calories,” states Dr. Mark Benden, Certified Professional Ergonomist and Executive VP of Neutral Posture. “In one year, that can amount to roughly 20 pounds. Results vary depending on body shape and metabolism, but even in the simplest case,” assures Benden, “everyone could stand to lose with this technique.”
“Rather than standing up to take a break from sitting,” says Dr. Benden, “we say, let sitting be the break from standing.” Research has clearly proven that too much of either can be detrimental to our employees’ health and well-being. Recently Neutral Posture decided it was time to re-evaluate the idea of only sitting down while working at a desk. The Ntune™ Seating System includes patented components including the N·step™ that can be used with any system furniture that can be set at standing height.
Standing for a couple of hours a day is hard work. As a result, the body burns more calories because it’s working harder. Having a great chair is even more critical now, because you need to be able to provide your body true comfort and support using ergonomics as adjustability during the part of the day you spend seated.
The Ntune™ concept is all about raising desk heights to 40 inches and then raising the chair to stool height, allowing users to easily and freely stand up to work when needed. The extra 10” of storage under the 40” desk is a 33% gain in cubic storage. Facilities planners will welcome this benefit once they learn to utilize products from forward thinking companies like Neutral Posture.
Neutral Posture partners with Jhane Barnes Textiles (JBT) in the launch of its newest fabric collection, Mathematical Inspirations. “As the CEO of the only woman owned seating manufacturer, I was thrilled to partner with the only woman owned textile company” says Boenigk, “Jhane Barnes’ designs will offer a new look for our products and have instant appeal with the A&D community. We are proud of our partnership and we look forward to working with Jhane on more projects in the future.”
Mazing Squares Cloud 9™ is the first series of the collection and is a design, created by JBT’s exclusive custom-written design software, of various-sized rectangles, arranged on a mathematical grid. Cloud 9™ fabric provides a more comfortable and ergonomic fabric selection and utilizes an environmentally responsible “no-waste” manufacturing part process in production. This three-dimensional knitting process is revolutionary in the upholstery business and it enables the production of a fully shaped chair cover incorporating predetermined patterns in a single stage yarn-to-product process. Using sophisticated computer-aided techniques; the 3-dimensional knitted fabrics are designed to follow curves and contours of the chair cushions, ensuring a smooth, comfortable fit.

Neutral Posture introduced its N•dustrial™ Series to provide safe, comfortable seating options for industrial applications such as ESD, Cleanroom, manufacturing and medical facilities. NP is pleased to announce that the N•dustrial™ Series has been approved for and added to the GSA Schedule. NP recognizes the need for ergonomic seating in industrial applications, because it understands that comfort is not usually one of the specifications facilities managers consider when procuring seating for unique applications, but it is vital to helping employees maintain their health and safety while they work. Now, this comfort is available through the GSA Schedule.
